Goal of Business Employment Dynamics (BED): Track
quarterly changes in net employment at private businesses across
the country.
Source of Data: The basis for the series is existing
state unemployment insurance (UI) employer records. These
records are used in all states to produce data through the
federal-state cooperative program known as the Quarterly Census
of Employment and Wages (QCEW). BED is a product of QCEW.
How: Compares gross job gains (expansions and openings)
versus gross job losses (reductions and closures) by major
industry sector yielding net changes in employment.
