Background
In 2007, the SCESC LMI Department, under contract with the Lowcountry Council
of Governments, conducted a comprehensive survey of wages and benefits for the
seven-county area including: Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton, Jasper, Charleston,
Orangeburg, and Chatham (GA).
The Lowcountry Wage and Benefit Survey was designed to identify average wages
based on skill levels across industries, as well as fringe benefits offered by
employers. See the attached survey report for complete survey methodology and
data analysis.
NOTE: All data in the survey report are current as of November 2007. The
survey database provides the latest information, including all updates.
Therefore, data displayed in the report may not be consistent with
information accessed through the database.
The survey captured wage data by skill level, rather than occupation. The
following summarizes skill-level definitions used:
Low Skill – no prior experience; minimum level of on-the-job
training (OJT)
Semi-skilled – limited experience in a related job; moderate OJT
Skilled – directly related experience; long-term OJT; voc/tech
training
Technical – technical training degree, certificate and/or license
Professional – college degree and certificate and/or license
Managerial – college degree or related experience in management
