Training Programs

The Workforce Investment Act
The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) is a federal program administered in South Carolina by the Employment Services Division of the Department of Employment and Workforce and 12 Workforce Investment areas throughout the state. A statewide board appointed by the governor and comprised of business owners, state government officials, educators and private citizens guides policy for all WIA-funded programs. WIA programs help businesses meet their need for skilled workers and provide individuals with access to training that helps them prepare for work.

Training is provided by WIA through certified training providers throughout the state to help jobseekers get the education and skills required for in-demand jobs. A list of training providers can be found on jobs.scworks.org. Contact your local SC Works center to see if you qualify for WIA funding.

Trade Assistance Adjustment
The U.S. Department of Labor provides assistance to workers who have been affected by increased imports, shifts of production or a service that has moved to another country. The federally-funded Trade Assistance Adjustment (TAA) program offers a complete package of benefits and support designed to help dislocated workers obtain the skills and resources needed to compete for jobs in today’s economy. 

Vocational Rehabilitation
The Vocational Rehabilitation program helps individuals with disabilities find employment. Services offered include rehabilitation counseling, diagnostic and evaluation services, physical restoration, artificial appliances, training and placement.

Technical Education Program
The South Carolina Technical and Comprehensive Education System and its 16 technical colleges comprise the state's largest post-high school educational system. Its colleges offer certificates, degrees and training programs in business, health, and industrial and engineering technology. The technical colleges also offer many short-term, day and evening programs that update the skills of employed people and those seeking jobs. Many technical college courses transfer credit to colleges and universities.

WorkKeys
The WorkKeys assessment test helps jobseekers make career decisions and compare their skills to skills required by in-demand jobs. Many South Carolina locations offer WorkKeys assessment tests, Worldwide Interactive Network (WIN) for WorkKeys courseware, and WorkKeys Job Profiling.

Jobs for America’s Graduates-South Carolina
Jobs for America’s Graduates-South Carolina (JAG-SC) is a high school dropout prevention program focused on academic success and career readiness skills. In each of the JAG-SC affiliated schools a dedicated career specialist functions as a teacher, coach, counselor and advocate for students with documented barriers to success. These barriers include circumstances such as  teen parenting, excessive absenteeism, low income households, and substance abuse. Over the course of enrollment, students master 81 competencies identified by business leaders as essential to successful employment. The program currently serves over a thousand active high school participants.
